Agreements, Clippings, Correspondence, Drawings, Pamphlets, Reports 1895-1966

Records related to the three locations of the Lutheran Deaconess Motherhouse and Training School, Baltimore, Maryland (BMD) comprise this series. They date from 1895-1966 and include lease agreements, architectural drawings, pamphlets, news articles, insurance reports, meeting minutes, published photographs, correspondence, rental agreements, dedication programs, postcards, and Christmas cards. Records of note include the original lease for the first deaconess motherhouse at 907 N. Fulton Avenue, Baltimore, Maryland and a listing in folder 5 of the contents of the cornerstone of the 2500 W. North Avenue. The original strongbox in which the contents of the cornerstone were placed is in the archives, but the contents are severely degraded and cannot be examined. It was retained as an example of inadequate protection methods at the time of placement into the cornerstone and subsequent substandard preservations methods. Some of the records that post-date the existence of the Baltimore deaconess community remain as a part of this series because as a corporation, the Baltimore Lutheran Deaconess Motherhouse and School, Inc. existed well into the period of the Lutheran Church in America Deaconess Community, the successor to BMD.
